About Howrey Island Recreation Area (SRMA)

Howrey Island Recreation Area consists of approximately 592 BLM-administered acres and is in the floodplain of the Yellowstone River. This is a "Pack In, Pack Out" area and all garbage must be removed. Some road sections may be closed due to high river flows or to protect habitat. The entire area is open to walk-in visitation, regardless of conditions. Overnight camping is permitted. No fireworks are allowed. Be mindful of seasonal and area fire restrictions.

How to Get There

From I-94 W or I-94 E take Exit 67 (north) toward Old US Hwy 312 and into Hysham; you can either go all the way into the town of Hysham or you can take a left at the Cut Across Road (Gumbo Hill Road is to your right). If you go left at the Cut Across Road, follow it to the end, take another left on State Highway 311, otherwise known as Old Highway 10; keep following this road, which will curve and go over railroad tracks. Immediately after the tracks (and before you cross the Yellowstone River) you will find Howrey Island Recreation Area (FWP calls it Myers Bridge) on your righthand side. If you go into the town of Hysham and do not take the Cut Across Road, follow Hwy 312 until you get to the Cenex station on your lefthand side. Take a left at the Cenex (Elliot Avenue) and follow it through town to the end, where you will take another left on Old Highway 10. Follow the same directions as given above for State Highway 311/Old Hwy 10. ***These directions are if you are coming from Miles City - from Billings you would take the Hysham exit.
