The International championship land sailing racing, and land sailing high speed records by a wind powered vehicle have both been set on Ivanpah Dry Lake. The dry lake consists of two parts, the East dry lake bed is great for large groups, speed events, long distance events; it can be accessed from behind the California Lottery store. The West dry lake bed can be accessed from behind Whiskey Pete's. Due to the importance of the dry lake bed for setting speed records its surface must remain smooth, this is achieved by locking the gates during wet seasons. Individual use of the dry lake bed for non-motorized sports is allowed with a permit; commercial, organized groups, competitive events and film are required to contact the Bureau of Land Management for a Special Recreation or Film Permit.
