The El Tovar Hotel, built in 1905 and a member of Historic Hotels of America® since 2012 was designated by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark in 1974. Historic Hotels of America is the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation® for recognizing and celebrating the finest historic hotels across America. Opening its doors in 1905, El Tovar Hotel, a former Harvey House, is considered the premier lodging facility at the Grand Canyon. Constructed of native stone and Oregon pine, this historic hotel was built as a destination resort and provides an air of venerable dignity. Its location is a mere 20 feet from the rim of the canyon and is one of only a handful of Harvey House facilities still in operation. Grand Canyon National Park is in northern Arizona. Grand Canyon Village (South Rim) is 60 miles north of Interstate 40 at Williams via Highway 64, and 80 miles northwest of Flagstaff via Highway 180.
